What exactly is a raw food diet?
There are two types of raw diet that may be prepared and fed to dogs and cats: BARF, and PMR. Both are fed unprocessed, meaning that they have not been treated using heat or pressure, and enzymes are active (have not been denatured). This gives these meals extremely high digestibility.
Further, BARF stands for “biologically appropriate raw food diet,” and is composed primarily of muscle meat, organ meat, and raw edible bone, with small additions such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and oils added in order to balance the meal. PMR stands for “prey model raw,” and is fed as either whole prey (for example, an entire rabbit or chicken), or a ratio diet that aspires to mimic whole prey, breaking down to an 80/10/5/5, being meat/raw edible bone/liver/other secreting organ (for example, kidney, pancreas or spleen), respectively.
What benefits can I expect my pet to reap when transitioning him/her to a raw food diet?
A raw diet is anti-inflammatory in nature, which is a huge positive. This is due to the meal’s low sugar (carbohydrate) content, high moisture, and ideal balance of fats (EPA:DHA, and ALA:LA). Because of this, it is easy for an animal that consumes a raw diet to:
- Maintain an ideal weight
- Possess a soft, shiny coat and pink, smooth skin
- Be in good dental health standing
- Fight the onset of chronic illness (such as recurring yeast infections, diabetes, pancreatitis, cancer, IBS)
- Have high-energy and a good demeanor
- Live a long, full life
Should I be concerned about feeding my animal raw bone?
While it is smart, and a good practice to always observe your animal while they eat any long-lasting snack, and to ensure the raw edible bone that is fed is non weight-bearing (such as a marrow bone), there are no other precautions one must take. Dogs and cats are biologically designed to consume raw edible bone. Their bodies are designed for this purpose, with teeth meat for ripping, tearing and crushing, and short, highly acidic digestive tracts. Bone is a wonderful source of calcium, and also assists in actively scraping plaque and tartar off of teeth, keeping them pearly-white. Lastly, bone firms stool, and helps express anal glands when going potty. *Please note: Raw Dog LLC offers both whole raw edible bone options (poultry quarters and backs, etc.), and cubes of ground meat and raw edible bone for your pets! Choose whichever is most convenient, and that you are most comfortable feeding.*
Are your formulas tested?
Yes, Raw Dog LLC’s BARF formulas were developed by Sonya, with the assistance of and input from Doctors of Veterinary Medicine. Our own pets, fed these raw meals for prolonged periods of time, had blood panels analyzed. All results came back looking great!
We also have a Certified Canine and Feline Nutritionist who studied at the New Jersey Academy of Natural Health Sciences as part of our active team - Emily. She also has an Associates in Applied Biological Sciences from Lansing Community College.
May I feed a mixture of raw and kibble?
It is perfectly acceptable to feed a hybrid diet! Doing so can help cut the cost of raw food, especially if you are the pet-parent of a large or giant breed animal, or the head of a multi-dog or cat household. Another common reason for feeding a mixed diet of raw with dry or canned food is comfort level. If you are worried about making a full, immediate transition to a BARF diet, take it slow! Be sure to reach out to us with any and all questions, too - we are happy to help in absolutely any way we can. We don’t judge! We are ALL trying to do what’s best for our pets.
